So i’m wasting time in Heathrow waiting for my gate to open, and thought I may as well do a first-post.

When you are flying to the USA, you have to provide both your place of residence in the UK and the place you are staying in the USA. I’m not entirely sure what the point of this is – to counter terrorism, track illegal immigration or something else? After all, if I wanted to sneak into the USA or blow up a plane, surely i could just lie about where i was going…

Does anybody know why this question is asked, and do the authorities ever check you are telling them the truth?
